How To Measure For Your Gates
To ensure complete satisfaction with your new gates we recommend you take the time to measure accurately before ordering. Here’s what to do.
Are you measuring a wooden gate or wrought iron gate?
Wooden Gates
If you choose one of our wooden gates, the width measurements stated are for the actual size of the gates. Taking the Norfolk Estate Gates as an example, the 12’ (3.66m) measurement stated in the GATE SIZE refers to the actual width of the pair of gates. Allowances will have to be made for posts, fittings and clearance at the centre.
If you do not have posts or pillars already, don’t forget to allow for them when measuring and ordering. For information on the posts and fittings available, please call our Technical Sales Desk on 01543 462500.
Heights quoted are for the actual height of the gate. When hanging, allow 2'' (5cm) for ground clearance.

Important Product Information - please read before you order
- Fittings and accessories can be purchased separately.
- All gates are supplied as natural wood with no finish applied. They must be treated with a high quality oil-based wood preservative or exterior wood paint before attaching any fittings or exposing to the elements.
- All timber used is top quality, smooth-planed Scandinavian redwood from managed forests. Laminated profiles may be used for some models.
- Items are subject to carriage charge supplements where stated. UK Mainland delivery only.
- All weights shown are the approximate weight of the heaviest gate.
- All sizes shown are nominal.
- All wooden single gates are right-hand hanging as viewed from the roadside, except for the Derbyshire 3' (92cm) garden gate and Town and County field gates, which can be ordered as left or right-hand hanging.
Are you measuring a wooden gate or wrought iron gate?
Wrought Iron Style Gates
If you choose one of our wrought iron style gates, the measurements stated are for the gap between your gate posts, not the actual gate size. Taking the Talisman Side Gate as an example, the 3’6” (1.07m) measurement stated in the GAP SIZE refers to the measurement taken from the inside of one gate post to the inside of the other gate post. You do not need to make any allowances for fittings as we make all the necessary calculations for you, even if steel posts are required. All adjustable hinges and latches are supplied FREE OF CHARGE.

We allow 2” (5cm) ground clearance for all heights of steel gates and railings. Therefore a gate listed as 6’ (1.83m) high will measure 5’10” (1.78m) high when delivered and 6’ (1.83m) high when hung.
For aesthetic reasons, all our 6’ wrought iron arch gates are 4’6” (1.37m) high to the start of the arch, which is made to a true radius, making the 3’ (92cm) wide gate 6’ (1.83m) high. Because all our arch gates are made to a true radius, the smaller width gates will be slightly shorter and the wider width gates will be higher.
Important Product Information - please read before you order
- All wrought iron style gates and railings are supplied with a factory-standard black primed finish. We can also supply them with a hard-wearing painted finish. Please telephone for details.
- To ensure the maximum life from your gates, when supplied with a black primed finish, they must be treated with an exterior enamel paint (see Treatments category) before attaching any fittings or exposing to the elements.
- All free hinges are adjustable.
- Railings are available in standard sizes, to match selected wrought iron style gates.
- All heights quoted allow 2” (5cm) ground clearance.
- Right or left-hand hanging referred to in the product description is as viewed from the roadside.
