Woman clings to railings before rescue

Woman clings to railings before rescue

23/03/2009

A woman who was close to falling to her death used railings to save herself before an elderly lady came to her rescue, it has emerged.

The Shields Gazette reported that 63-year-old Pat Larsen was on the pedestrian bridge over Western Approach in South Shields when she saw a young woman on the wrong side of the railings.

According to the publication, when Mrs Larsen turned away to call the police, the young woman lost her footing and fell but managed to hold on to the railings so she did not fall into oncoming traffic.

Mrs Larsen told the publication that a cyclist came over to help by getting hold of the woman as well and "within a few seconds a crowd of people had appeared who helped haul her back over the railings".

It was recently reported that railings are to be improved in Malton's town centre as part of a £350,000 facelift.
