People in Stow-on-the-Wold have won their battle to see gates opened on a path in the area, it has emerged.

Arkell's Brewery has been persuaded to give in after landlords Mandy and Paul Griffiths locked the gates to White Hart Alley causing upset among the public, This is Gloucestershire reported.

Townspeople claimed the walkway had been used as a shortcut for many years and they held a protest outside the gates, while a petition was launched to get the White Hart proprietors to reassess their decision, according to the newspaper.

"After negotiations with James Arkell, I'm delighted that an agreement has been reached whereby access through the gates will be reinstated," Stow mayor Robin Jones told the publication.

He revealed that MP Geoffrey Clifton-Brown and numerous others had been putting in the work to get the gates opened.

A recent study into an alley gates initiative in Liverpool has significantly increased the amount of people who feel safe in their homes.
