Cemetery gates to be repaired

Cemetery gates to be repaired

31/03/2009

Gates at West Norwood Cemetery have been sent to Bristol for repair after a driver crashed into them, it has been reported.

The Grade II listed gates were damaged when a builder fixing a drainage problem drove into them when he was leaving the cemetery, according to Your Local Guardian.

Jill Dudman, from Friends of West Norwood Cemetery, told the publication: "This is not ideal because there is no porter's lodge on this gate like with the main entrance, which compromises cemetery security," perhaps hinting that gates are needed for safety reasons.

The contractors that the builder works for will have to pay for the repair to the 100-year-old gates, the news provider revealed.

West Norwood Cemetery was originally set up to cope with the expanding population of London in the early 19th century and was opened in 1837.

It contains listed monuments as well as a number of memorials, one of which is dedicated to Sir Henry Tate.
