One of Sheffield's oldest cemeteries is set to be cleaned up and conservation work will be undertaken on gates at the site, it has been reported.
According to the Sheffield Star, the local council has put together an action plan to preserve Burngreave Cemetery, with work set to be done on walls and boundaries, and improvements will made to paths.
"We want the cemetery to be cleaned up. Brave men who gave their lives in the World War are buried there and we owe it to them," John Duignam, who has campaigned for years to make sure the area is preserved, told the publication.
Burngreave Cemetery dates back to 1861 and covers 37 acres, with more than 158,000 burials having taken place there.
The Sheffield Star reveals the cemetery was one of the first to come under the council's control and 30 years ago it stopped taking on new burials.
