East Midlands Trains is looking to install barrier gates at Sheffield Station so that the rail company can make sure all passengers are carrying a valid ticket.
However, leader of Sheffield city council Paul Scriven has said the local governmental body does not support the plans to place gates at the station.
The council believes the gates block the through route used by people every day and the station footbridge, which may include gating itself, gives pedestrians a safe and secure route to different areas of the city.
"It is vital that everyone's views are represented and that East Midlands Trains listens to Sheffield residents. There is still time to have your say," Mr Scriven said, adding that the train company needs to find a solution to suit everyone.
Perhaps the bodies involved could look to install a new footbridge with secure gates for increased safety.
Last month, a council spokesman told the Nottingham Evening Post that a new gate could lead to less congestion and quicker bus journeys in the city.
