Church Ward locks alleygates for heightened security

23/02/2009

Crime and anti-social behaviour are being fought in Church Ward as £150,000 has been spent on installing 80 alley gates, it has emerged.

Lyndsay Young, writing for the Crosby Herald, revealed councillors in the region have put up ward money and managed to get outside funding for the gates installation over the last three years.

Councillor Paul Cummins told the news provider: "People feel safer. The back entries in many areas are much cleaner than they were and it seems to have brought out a sense of community."

Mr Cummins worked with councillors Daren Veidman and Veronica Webster to have the gates installed and he added that people are experiencing a quieter time, the writer noted.

The project is ongoing and more cash is being looked for to support further gate implementation, Ms Young continued.

Earlier this month, Carlisle resident Jacqui Johnstone told the News & Star that alley gates are essential in fighting antisocial behaviour.
