Simple precautions 'reduce risk of burglary'

19/02/2009

Homeowners need only take a few simple precautions to guard their property and possessions against burglary, as such criminals are lazy and look for easy ways in, it is stated.

People should look at their homes from the outside and consider how a burglar would attempt to get in, the Fermangh Herald reports.

Garden gates, railing and fencing around the perimeter can make it difficult for intruders to enter the grounds in the first place, it comments, putting them off from even attempting to get into the house itself.

Wrought iron gates can be an effective deterrent and should have at least two locks, the news provider continues.

"Their ornamental ironwork makes climbing difficult and any intruders can be seen through them," it states.

Earlier this month, the Halifax Peace of Mind Index revealed that 74 per cent of Brits say locks on gates and doors make them feel safe in a property.
