Gates to be installed in York to curb vandalism

Gates to be installed in York to curb vandalism

29/01/2009

A number of alley gates in York are to be installed as part of an initiative by the council to reduce the amount of vandalism.

The York Press reported that a number of snickets and alleys are to be shut by gates after 20:00 GMT in a bid to prevent criminals and vandals from using them.

According to the newspaper, the initiative is to receive the go-ahead despite a potential risk of legal action being taken against the council due to the length of the route that people wishing to walk from Carrfield to Chantry Close will now have to take.

However, councilor Steve Galloway said it is unlikely to occur as many people in the area do not use the alleyways after dark.

Up to nine alley ways will be gated off and residents who live next to the £3,000 gates will receive a pin code to open them.

Devon 24 reported that a set of metal gates are to be introduced to the entrance to the Northern Burrows area to prevent vandals.
