Gated communities more economically successful, shows research

Gated communities more economically successful, shows research

28/01/2009

Communities which are inside a set of gates are more economically successful than those without gates, new research has claimed.

The Independent cites the results of a study by Glasgow and Sheffield Hallam universities, which shows 73 per cent of residents within a gated community are economically active compared with 57 per cent outside.

Further findings from the research revealed that those who live behind gates are better paid and educated than their counterparts.

Speaking to the newspaper, Simon Barry of estate agents Knight Frank, said: "It's especially important for those who travel a lot and therefore seek a 'lock up and leave' property, as well as somewhere they can park the car securely and feel safe. This is key for single women and the elderly."

He added that living inside a gated community increases the value of a property due to less noise, minimal traffic and increased security.

Meanwhile, figures from the Royal Chartered Institution of Surveyors, previously reported by the Independent, revealed that nearly three-quarters of those who live in gated communities believe they do so due to extra security.
