Residents in Bedford need to remember to lock all gates and to check security features are in working order following an increase in the number of burglaries.

According to the Bedford Today, the public need to do what they can to protect themselves in the wake of the recent spate.

The police stated that it has increased the number of patrols in Queens Park, Newnham and the Tavistock Street area of town after it announced 12 separate incidents are being investigated.

Speaking to the newspaper, inspector Bill Abrahm said: "We want to reassure residents we are doing all we can to nip these offences in the bud, but at the same time make them aware of this pattern so they can take the appropriate steps to protect their homes and property."

He added that although two men have recently been arrested in connection with some of the incidents, homeowners need to remain vigilant and ensure security measures including gates are being used.

Meanwhile, home insurance provider More Th>n recently advised people to take better care of their security devices at properties in order to make it more difficult for burglars to break in.
