Family wins in bid to increase security at cemetery

Family wins in bid to increase security at cemetery

20/01/2009

A family has been successful in its bid to increase security at a cemetery where their son is buried.

The Gazette Live reported that Danny Cheney launched a campaign to have the gates of the cemetery shut at night after witnessing anti-social behaviour in the baby garden.

He provided Stockton Council with a petition signed by 200 people appealing for the gates to be locked at night.

Five months after Mr Cheney's son died the council has agreed to the move.

Speaking to the news provider, Steve Nelson, Stockton Council's cabinet member for housing and community safety, said that the gates will be closed between 18:00 and 06:00 GMT from October through to March and from 21:00 to 06:00 GMT between April and September.

"The council's neighbourhood enforcement officers will continue to monitor the area as part of their patrols and we will also be assessing any impact these changes may have on visitors to the cemetery," he added.

Previously, the Queensferry Gazette reported that St Michael's church in West Lothian will be fitted with new gates by Easter.
