Residents in Buckinghamshire have been encouraged to make use of new devices which allow electrical equipment to be left on a timer while a property is unoccupied.
According to the Bucks Free Press, 1,500 of the Bright Idea timer switches have been handed out to shoppers and travellers at events held in shopping centres, gardening stores and train stations around the county.
South Bucks district councillor Shorne Tilbey said that campaigners had been working hard on the scheme.
"Its popularity has hopefully made residents aware of one option that they have to protect their properties from burglary when the nights draw in," she said.
Homeowners may also be encouraged to invest in a set of garden gates in a bid to deter would-be burglars.
Indeed, home insurance provider Halifax has advised that gates should be kept closed this winter to make sure that thieves do not view the property as an easy target.
