Residents who are planning a garden makeover this Christmas should not forget to make sure their gates are in good working order, the Huddersfield Daily Examiner has advised.
According to the paper, checking that garden gates open and close easily and are not blocked is an important part of a garden overhaul and will improve access for any friends or relatives who drop by over the Christmas period.
Other important action areas included clearing up fallen leaves and foliage.
"Clearing them also allows paths to dry out so that the aged aunt does nor slip over as she walks down the path to give you a wet, sloppy kiss!" the article continued.
Investing in cheerful flowers will also help to brighten up gardens and get visitors in the festive spirit, the paper added.
In other recent announcements, Halifax has urged people to make sure that garden gates are closed this winter in a bid to prevent theft.
