Cemetery gates 'should be moved'

Cemetery gates 'should be moved'

28/11/2008

Gates at the entrance to Portlethen cemetery in Aberdeen should be set back to address an issue with drainage at the site, a local campaigner has urged.

Speaking to the Aberdeen Press and Journal, Fred Stewart, 73, of Alder Drive, Portlethen, claimed that alternatively, the situation could be remedied by cutting the corner off a verge which serves to prevent proper water drainage.

Mr Stewart called on the council to divert "wasted" funds spent on returfing lawns after burials to cover the cost of moving the gates or making landscaping alterations.

"It doesn't take much to work out how to fix the problem. All they have to do is to move the gates back a bit or cut the corner of the verge off," he said.

In other recent developments, Inverclyde Now has reported that gates at a cemetery in Greenock will now be locked in the evenings after nearly 90 headstones were vandalised.

The new measures will be brought into effect once a notice has been put up to inform visitors of the changes.
