Canal clean-up steps up with gates

Canal clean-up steps up with gates

26/11/2008

Efforts to clean up a canal running through Brent have stepped up a gear with proposals to install alley gates to prevent fly-tipping.

Speaking to the Wembley & Kingsbury Times, Brent South MP Dawn Butler said that other improvements will make the area safer for children, while access improvements are also being considered.

The proposals form part of a £500,000 renovation project for the canal, which has been a hotspot for illegal dumping.

More than 250 tonnes of waste have been left along the canal during the past 18 months.

It is hoped that new alley gates will help to prevent people from fly-tipping.

Money for the clean-up project is being provided by British Waterways over a three-year period.

Elsewhere, Chester council has also recently considered the installation of alley gates in an effort to clean up areas in Hoole.

The Chester Chronicle reports that the council has received repeated complaints concerning dumping, vandalism and antisocial behaviour in alleys in the suburb.
