Cemetery gates to close after vandalism

Cemetery gates to close after vandalism

25/11/2008

Wrought iron gates marking the entrance to a cemetery in Greenock are to be closed at night after a recent bout of vandalism.

According to Inverclyde Now, nearly 90 headstones towards the rear of Greenock Cemetery were damaged over the course of the weekend, leading the local council to limit access to the site after dark by closing the gates.

"The only gate open after 6pm between October and March will be the main gate at South Street," the paper advised.

Meanwhile, during the longer daylight hours seen between April and September, the gates will close at 8pm.

The new arrangements will be brought into force as soon as new signs have been erected to inform visitors of the changes.

Earlier this month, residents in Scarborough began work on a restoration project which aims to bring the gates of Dean Road and Manor Road cemetery back to their former glory.
