Gates erected to deter speeding motorists

Gates erected to deter speeding motorists

20/11/2008

Two new wooden field gates have been installed at either end of the main road in to Lockeridge, Wiltshire in a bid to deter speeding motorists.

According to local paper the Gazette and Herald, the new wooden gates are expected to serve as a reminder to drivers that they are entering a village and that they should slow down.

Parish councillor Judith Woodget explained: "Research has shown that motorists respect such an entrance to a village and it makes them slow down to an appropriate speed."

She added that since the installation of the new gates, there has been agreement among villagers that there has been a notable decrease in traffic speeds.

Other efforts to slow motorists down have included putting up scarecrows near the entrance of the village.

The same method will be employed again this year.

Elsewhere, the BBC has warned that rural thefts of wooden field gates witnessed in Selkirk pose a risk to both the safety of livestock and residents.
