If someone has been unlucky enough to have been burgled, they should get the police to tell them if there are any issues with the security of their home, it has been suggested.
Such people should look to take the opportunity to improve home security, which could include new gates, so that it will be more difficult for a burglar to make a return visit, according to Confused.com.
The company was reacting to new figures that showed cases of burglaries went up by four per cent between October and December 2008, in comparison to the same period the year before.
"It is essential that all homeowners take whatever steps they can to protect themselves. Confused.com estimates a staggering 16 million homes in the UK have no alarm fitted," commented Darren Black, head of home insurance at Confused.com.
Norwich Union recently claimed that household burglaries could rise by 50 per cent by the end of this year, perhaps suggesting that people should secure their home with some new gates.
