Council says cemetery gates are working well

27/04/2009

Since the local council started locking gates at Preston Cemetery there have been 50 per cent fewer cases of vandalism, it has been claimed.

Talking to the Lancashire Evening Post in Preston, a council spokesperson said that the gates to the cemetery started to be locked two and a half years ago and the local authority is looking to get funding for railings at the site to increase security further.

Jewish and Muslim gravestones were recently targeted by vandals at the cemetery, according to the publication, and the spokesperson revealed that gates to the Hebrew and Muslim sections are now being shut since the incident.

"The issue of CCTV is one which we have looked into, however we do not believe it is feasible for a number of reasons," they added.

Earlier this month, the Bradford Telegraph and Argus reported that new gates had been installed at the Ashlands Road cemetery in Ilkley and were to be locked up to deter boy racers and learner drivers from going through it.
