A resident has expressed his surprise at the fact that gates at South Marine Park in South Shields are not shut, it has emerged.
John Elliott, from Larch Avenue in Whitburn, wrote to the Shields Gazette and questioned how those running things in the area can still be unsure if shutting the gates will both save money and keep vandals out.
He suggested that signs should be installed to let people know when they need to leave the park and for those that cannot read an alarm or bell could be put in place to let them know the gates are shutting.
Mr Elliot added that the gates have been in place for the past 20 years and he thought they would be locked at night to stop damage being done.
Meanwhile, a certain Beth Austin from Romilly Street in South Shields has written into the publication saying that the gates should not be shut at night as those that want to use the park during the late hours should not be punished.
