Around two-thirds of British adults tried their hand at DIY over the last year, according to new statistics, which may suggest that more people are erecting their own garden gates.

They claim to have saved more than £49 billion by making improvements to their home themselves, with seven per cent saying they had carried out building projects and 51 per cent having painted walls.

Ben Richards, content editor at housetohome, said: "There is much that can be done yourself and it's often a lot easier than you think. Step-by-step video guides and online articles have given everyone access to information."

He said, however, that there is a difference between undertaking plumbing and painting a wall, as Mr Richards admitted that it is important to consider what jobs are best left to professionals.

Earlier this month, Unbiased.co.uk reported that 25 per cent of Brits were looking to make significant improvements to their property this year, which could include gates enhancements.
