Cadets take part in parade by Ypres gates

21/05/2009

Two cadets from the West Lowland Battalion Army Cadet Force have taken part in a parade at the Menin Gate in Ypres, it has been reported.

Ross Hamilton and Michael Cox went on a trip to the First World War battlefields in Belgium and tooks part in the parade, according to Andrew Newport, writing for the Paisley Daily Express.

The gates are in memorial of those British and Commonwealth soldiers who were killed and whose graves are unknown, Mr Newport revealed.

Instructor Andrew Hay told the newspaper: "Certain graves are of great interest. For example, Valentine Joe Strudwick, of the Rifle Brigade, was aged only 15 when he died - younger than most cadets on the trip."

He added that the trip ended too soon for the cadets before they headed back off to Scotland.

Earlier this month, the Bolton News reported that members of the Bolton Royal Artillery Association have been campaigning for iron railings to be installed around Bolton's Nelson Square war memorial.
