Stoke-on-Trent City Council has installed five new gates to prevent crime in the Meir area, it has been revealed.
Residents from the area said that nearby alleys had become a hotspot for antisocial behaviour and crime, according to This is Staffordshire.
Chairman of Wood Farm Residents' Association Brian Jones told the newspaper that residents had wanted the gates for years.
"The residents' association recommended the gates and we've been promised they will be done several times. Now they are finally in place, I feel a lot better," he explained.
Mr Jones added that once the gates are operational he believes many people will feel safer and drugs problems will be cut by around 80 to 90 per cent.
City councillor for Weston and Meir North Michael Coleman informed the publication that the area also needs extra policing.
Earlier this month, Stoke-on-Trent City Council and Staffordshire Moorlands District Council urged people to use their share of £3 million of funding from West Midlands Kick Start Partnership for property repairs, possibly on gates.
