The average amount spent on home improvements such as gates enhancements over the past 12 months totalled £5,300, it has been claimed.
Redecorating was found to be the most popular form of home improvement, according to the annual Halifax Home Improvement Survey.
The study also showed that 39 per cent of respondents have chosen to undertake some garden improvements over the last year, meaning that some may have been taking care of their gates.
Meanwhile, 13 per cent of respondents said they have either added space to their property during the last year or have plans to do so.
"In the current housing market, many people have decided to stay put rather than move. Therefore it is no surprise that we've seen an increase in people adding space to their property," commented Stephen Noakes, commercial director at Lloyds Banking Group.
Recent research from the AA revealed that 38 per cent of Brits were due to spend more time at home doing DIY over the bank holiday weekend.
