Some £6.4 million has been spent on community revamps in Nottingham in the past 12 months, with projects including new gates, walls and gardens.
As part of the Building Better Communities scheme, 162 projects have been completed, with 25 still ongoing and a further 43 due to start, the Nottingham Evening Post reports.
The scheme allows community groups or individuals to apply for funding from the county council to help improve their local area.
Councillor Chris Baron explained how a project in the Church Lane area has had a huge effect for under £10,000.
Money was used to tidy up a messy lay-by, put in a kissing gate, improve paving and walls and plant some wildflowers, he said.
The gate and other elements provide peace of mind for residents, added Stephen Mayes, chairman of the Linby Meadows Residents' Committee.
Railings have recently been introduced in the Horden area of Hartlepool in a bid to improve pedestrian safety.
