Placing padlocks on gates is an effective and inexpensive way to prevent crime, it has been suggested.
Taunton-based crime reduction officer Tony Alderman said that there are a number of simple yet useful steps that can be taken to cut crime and will have a big impact on a property's overall security.
"Garden tools are often used to assist the burglar breaking into a property - ladders are particularly helpful to thieves for example, so keep them locked away," Mr Alderman advised.
Avon and Somerset Constabulary has announced it is looking to help people fight crime by encouraging them to get involved in some gardening.
This is because gardens are regularly the first line of defence against criminals, the organisation asserted.
It claimed that two-thirds of burglars access houses through the back of the property.
A recent Gocompare.com survey revealed that 24.2 per cent of Brits have been on the receiving end of garden crime.
