Towpath set for improvement with barriers

Towpath set for improvement with barriers

23/06/2009

A pedestrian and cycling route along the Leeds and Liverpool Canal towpath is set to see improvements as part of a new project.

Barriers, possibly gates or railings, will be positioned to enable cycle and wheelchair access while preventing motorcyclists from using the route.

Leeds City Council, British Waterways, Sustrans and Leeds Metropolitan University are delivering the project which is to be partly funded by Cycling England.

"I am sure that, once completed, the route will prove very popular with students in Kirkstall, as well as commuters heading into the city centre," said Andrew Carter, joint leader and executive member for development and regeneration at Leeds City Council.

Work is set to start on June 29th and the council expects the project will be completed by late October this year.

Earlier this month, the local authority announced that a £1 million investment is set to transform the centre of Yeadon, which may mean the area is set for some attractive new gates.
