Homeowners in the Wisbech area have been advised to consider using bolts and padlocks on side gates to ensure their properties are safe, it has emerged.
Local police have recommended that people should place bolts at the top, middle and bottom of the gates because top bolts might be accessed by crooks, the Wisbech Standard has reported.
The advice comes after Operation Luton was launched, which is led by Chief Inspector Russell Waterston and seeks to crackdown on home burglaries, the newspaper revealed.
Chief Inspector Waterston told the paper: "This operation will invest time and resources into tackling this growing problem by gathering intelligence and bringing those responsible to justice."
He urged residents to provide the police with any information they may have on "anyone who is known for handling stolen goods".
Recent research from Direct Line revealed that June and August are the two worst months for burglary overall.
