Gates at unoccupied buildings should be well maintained by businesses during school holidays as a security measure, it has been claimed.
Firms should also look to have decent quality gates around the perimeters of such buildings as well as fencing and walls, according to Paul Redington, property claims manager at Aviva.
"Any security that is in place should be made obvious. CCTV should be fully advertised as it can act as a strong deterrent," said Mr Redington.
An automatic fire/smoke detection system should be implemented in unoccupied constructions as they will "detect and locate fires in their early stages" as well as help to cut down on any potential damage, he commented.
Mr Redington also advised the use of security lighting as they can deter any wrongdoers.
Last month, Virgin Money recommended people to ensure that their gates, fences and sheds are in good condition to help put thieves off from entering a property.
