Carlisle to see alley gates installed

Carlisle to see alley gates installed

26/07/2009

New alley gates are set to appear in Carlisle as the city council looks to make communities safer.

Gates will be installed in Denton Holme in the back alleys between Nelson Street and St James's Road as well as Nelson Street and Clifton Street.

St Aidan's and Currock are also set to see gates installed and the installation project will run until the beginning of October.

Carlisle and Eden Crime and Disorder Reduction Partnerships have provided two-thirds of the funding for the gates, while Cumbria County Council's Carlisle Local Area Committee has put forward the other third.

"I am sure that these new alley gates will be warmly welcomed by local people, as they will help prevent the types of anti-social behaviour that have plagued them," commented Cumbria county councillor John Mallinson, chair of Carlisle Local Committee.

Residents in the area have recently been invited to an open day for the Carlisle City Council Gypsy and Traveller site, which may feature some new gates or fences.
