Those looking to keep their bikes safe should keep their two-wheeled contraptions in a secure garage, it has been advised.
In news that could encourage people to invest in some new security gates as well, nearly a quarter of student cyclists at UK universities have been hit by bike theft, research from M&S Home Insurance has shown.
The survey of 2,000 students revealed that 14 per cent have been burgled while at university and 22 per cent of student cyclists have had their bikes taken.
"Unfortunately bikes are a prime target for thieves and cyclists should take basic security steps to decrease the risk of becoming a victim," said Steve Price, M&S head of general insurance.
M&S Money also recommended that people who have been affected by a bike theft should contact the police, which is important for a security claim.
Tescocompare.com recently advised cyclist students to check whether their bikes are covered by their insurance policy.
