Southport alleyway to be closed off with gates

Southport alleyway to be closed off with gates

22/09/2009

An alleyway in Southport has been provided with new gates after a long-running campaign by local authorities to seal it off.

The site on Lord Street has become a well-known gathering point for drug use and other antisocial activity, but a gate order took 19 months to come into effect due to conservation area regulations, the Southport Visiter reports.

"Despite the delay, it's great the gates have finally been installed," councillor David Pearson told the paper.

"The alley has been an eyesore for far too long and finally something has been done about it."

It will now be closed off every day after 17:30 BST on Monday to Saturday and between 11:00 BST and 17:00 BST on Sundays.

The news follows reports in the Prestwich and Whitefield Guide that Bury Council has responded to requests from local residents to install alley gates in the town to reduce crime.ADNFCR-1968-ID-19375245-ADNFCR
