Chances Park in Carlisle is undergoing a major upgrade worth £1.18 million, which will include new railings, gates, footpaths and trees, according to reports.
Work began on the project last month when park owners Ruth and Mary Chance cut the first sod, the News and Star reports, although the scheme has also been criticised by local people who claim it is causing too much disruption.
However, Iris Rogan from the Friends of Chances Park defended the work, saying tree-thinning will produce more healthy vegetation in the future.
"The thinning process has already helped a number of elderly people, who felt unsafe walking in the dense undergrowth, return to using the park," she told the paper.
Additionally, the new gates and railings that will feature in the park when the project is complete should help park users to feel safer.
The lottery-funded project will also include the repair of the recreational area's historic ha-ha and Georgian garden.
