People in Hertfordshire have been reminded of the simple steps they can take to reduce the threat of intrusion attempts, including locking their garden gates.
Hertfordshire Constabulary has issued a series of tips to help homeowners keep their possessions safe as the darker nights tempt thieves to make a burglary attempt.
As well as keeping valuables such as laptops and mobile well out of sight, householders have been advised that securing their rear garden gates can be an effective measure against thieves, as this is a common access point.
"Don't leave ladders and tools outside - they could be used by a burglar," the force advised in a statement.
"If your neighbours are away on holiday, you can help to deter burglars and give their home the lived-in look by putting away their emptied rubbish bins."
