BSIA advises locked gates to keep away thieves

The cover of darkness can be a useful tool to burglars according to the British Security Industry Association (BSIA), which has advised homeowners that something as simple as locking a gate can provide protection.

"Simple security measures like locking doors and gates unless you need entry or exit can defeat them," commented Alex Carmichael, technical director of the BSIA.

"You should remember that good home security really does make a difference and will bring you peace of mind."

Mr Carmichael advised homeowners to first consider how a burglar could gain access to their property, then take the appropriate measures to reduce the risk.

He also stressed that quality security solutions provided by a professional company that complies with all the appropriate standards should be chosen to ensure peace of mind.

The BSIA recently published guidance for the education sector on the application of access control systems, including gates and railings.
