Railings will be erected across six beach ramps along the Maryport Promenade in an effort to curb recurring vandalism.
Chains and warning signs on beach access ramps in the area are frequently being damaged or stolen, leading council officials to decide to put fixed railings across the top of six of them, the Times and Star reports.
The decision has been criticised by councillor Martin Wood, who said Allerdale Council has a responsibility to retain beach access at all times.
"I know the vandalism is frustrating but there has always been public access to the beach and this should continue," he told the paper.
However, councillor David Wilson defended the decision, saying that the extra expense of repairing the damage is frustrating to the authority and will create extra expenses for the taxpayer.
A set of railings were recently erected on the roof of Kings Hall in Herne Bay to prevent people from falling off it after a spate of dangerous incidents.
