The proposal to remove railings from roadsides in the Enfield area has been criticised by local shopkeepers, who fear that it could make them more vulnerable to thieves.
Enfield Council is planning to take away roadside railings in the region in an effort to improve visibility for drivers and de-clutter the streets, the Enfield Independent reports.
However, local retailers believe the change will make it more likely that they will be the target of smash and grab robberies.
"I think it is going to be lunacy, people are going to run across the road like they did before," Pauline Sherman of Triggs Jewellers told the paper.
"Other jewellers have been robbed by men on motorbikes, now they can drive a car up to us. Great."
A letter from a landlord published in Market Rasen Today recently stated that gates and railings are an effective way to reduce crime.
